Annie Finch is the author of twenty books of poetry and poetics. She holds three degrees, including a Ph.D. from Stanford University, and has been a student of healing modalities for four decades. Poetry Witches Workshops are the culmination of Annie’s lifework as a teacher, combining her gifts as a healer with her profound knowledge of language rhythm.

FAQ

Q have never written creatively before. Will I get anything from this course?

Yes. This course builds on rhythmic knowledge that is equally available to all of us, and it presumes no prior writing experience.

Q I’m not really interested in writing, but I am interested in developing myself psychologically and spiritually. Will this course help me on my path?

Yes. The reason that poets have been considered spiritual leaders is that the rhythmic language activates our minds, hearts, souls, and more and connects us with inner voices. These are precious tools for your inner growth. Even if you have no writing experience, these tools will offer you a direct path to communicate with unheard parts of yourself.

Q I have an advanced degree in poetry writing. Will I learn anything in this course that I don’t know already?

Yes. The odds are that you will learn information that is completely new to you. Most graduate programs in poetry writing today don’t teach meter and rhythmic writing at all. If they are one of the few that do, they are likely to teach only one rhythm (air/iambic). Even if they teach that, I will be teaching it to you in a far more holistic way.

Q I’m planning on taking one of your in-person workshops soon. Will it just be repeating what we do there?

You can compare it to the difference between an online video yoga class and an in-person intensive. Hands-on interaction and one-on-one feedback bring the same postures to a different level. This series will be excellent background so that you will get the most out of our in-person workshop. Enjoy the online course, and I’m looking forward to meeting you soon!

Q How did you develop the Poetry Witches method?

I was raised with the rhythms of poetry spoken aloud within the family, and I count myself a descendent of Celtic bards and Norse volurs. My love of poetry brought me through college to graduate school, where I found that poets today have often forgotten rhythm. So I created ways to teach it, and as my witchy spirituality developed, eventually I combined the two together. After nearly four decades of teaching experience, at the age of 62 I am finally teaching what I was born to teach!
